Apex Porto Alegre
During your three weeks in Porto Alegre - Southern Brazil, you will have the opportunity to learn and grow alongside the team of missionaries serving here. Our desire is to invest in you while giving you a taste of what cross-cultural missions is like.
Though often considered a "reached" nation, the task of evangelization and mission in Brazil is unfinished, especially in the South. Though neither Rome or Dubai, Porto Alegre is a major and influential city in the south of Brazil. The last capital city before Uruguay and Argentina, it's also the last in terms of evangelical presence, presence of churches, and presence of people committed to Jesus. It's a capital that mixes modernity and prosperity, history and poverty, as well as revolutionary and progressive ideas permeated by French philosophy and santería religion.
Looking within the church, more and more Christians have separated their spiritual life from their daily life, not living God's sending and mission from Monday to Saturday. Leaders between the ages of 25 and 40 have all but disappeared, as churches are suffering stagnation and clear decline.
Yet God is at work, and we are beginning to see it now even more clearly! The severe and widespread devastation caused by multiple floods from the end of 2023 to mid-2024 has left behind something more than pain and tragedy. We are noticing a greater interest and urgency to face spiritual questions in search of something more reliable than earthly goods and human plans.
On this ground, we continue working to plant a church that is Mission-oriented, Biblical, Simple, and Transformative, serving as a center for sending people. This is Redenção Church. Our primary goal for the next 18 months is evangelism and building connections in the community. For visiting groups and individuals coming for short-term internships, there are abundant opportunities to help the Redenção church family in engaging our neighbors which go beyond language barriers: Music, Sports, English Practice, and Manual Service (cleaning and renovations). All of these activities should converge towards evangelism and connection, taking advantage of the broad outreach we had during the flood relief efforts.
If you want to make a difference in people's lives, experience a vibrant culture, a city with endless possibilities for service and a happy team who love doing what they do and have fun while serving God with responsibility and zeal, this is the place for you
Our prayer is that this trip will not only help you grow in your faith, but that it will also help you to serve in God’s kingdom wherever the Lord takes you. Come be a part of what God is doing in Porto Alegre!
